After 20 years in Kollywood, Ajith Kumar still commands a huge opening at the box-office, earning the title of the ‘King of Openings’.
Billa 2 is his 51st movie and he is as thrilled as he was during his first film. While Billa was stylish, its prequel Billa 2 is about the journey and transformation of underdog David to an international don, Billa. In an exclusive interview to DC, Ajith, talks about his work, family and hobbies.
What’s special about Billa 2?
I am not comfortable talking about my films before release. I believe it’s up to the audience to decide and judge for themselves.
We hear that you’ve performed a few death-defying stunts without a body double!
I have only done my job as a professional. The credit goes to the entire team for taking utmost care with regard to the safety of the actors involved in the action sequences.
Special thanks goes out to stunt choreographer Stefan Richtar from Germany. I don’t think I’ve achieved much considering the fact that our soldiers in the armed forces work in more hostile conditions every day, in order to protect us and our borders. They are the true heroes!
Do you have a yardstick while choosing scripts?
Most importantly, what I look for before agreeing to do a film is compatibility between the producer, director and myself.
If we cannot vibe well for five minutes, there is no way we can spend 50 days together on location. Choosing scripts can be difficult because a good storyteller may not necessarily be a good director and vice-versa.
Will we see a romantic Ajith again?
Me playing a romantic hero at 41? I hope you’re kidding! Well if you insist, I may if it’s a romantic or situational comedy. (He chuckles.)
Is your wife your pillar of strength?
Yes, my wife Shalini is a sensible and strong woman. Sometimes we do discuss films. As a married couple, we both experience the same emotions and challenges that every other couple faces. Just because we are a part of the film industry, it does not make us special in any way.
How does your daughter Anoushka handle your stardom?
(His eyes light up) Anoushka is still too young to understand, but whenever she sees us on screen she blushes.
What do you do when you’re not working or spending time with your family?
I indulge in aero-modeling; a hobby that I enjoy very much.
